It always hard when a friend is in pain,
When it seems they struggle in vain
I want to help, offer some peace
Something for the pain to cease
I try to think of something to say
Something to make the pain go away
Something to make the suffering end
Some silver lining around the bend
My words of comfort ring hollow in my ears
How can I promise release from their fears
I wish I could speak and let it be done
One word for the hurt to be gone
I cannot, so I keep quiet
While my friends’ emotions riot.
They do not know I care,
They do not know the pain I share
I do not want them to know
For I have no way to show
I have no way to heal
I have no way to change how they feel
Perhaps it is enough to be there
Perhaps the pain gets easier when you share
